Stretch your dollar further: 30 cheapest travel destinations from $25 per day

For over 15 years of solo travel and backpacking around the world, here are my favorite cheapest places to travel to from $25-$50 USD per day budget.

The first 7 years of my world travel are all about backpacking and budget travel. During my 3.5 year South America backpacking, I spent $0 USD on accommodations and mastered cheap travel hacks.

As usual, a decade ago, travel was way more affordable but with the rise and popularity of digital nomads and living abroad, travel has become expensive.

However, if itโ€™s your first time to travel the world, youโ€™re not too late for the show. In this post, I excluded the expensive tours so separate that from your travel budget.

I did include DIY tours here where you can spend less than $10 per tour. That is if you are up for doing things on your own.

If you have any questions or need tips about traveling on a budget, just get in touch or leave a comment below! Letโ€™s hit it with the list of cheapest travel destinations in the world list.

๐Ÿค‘ Where is the cheapest place to go on a trip?

cheapest places to travel
In India, I only spent $25 per day.

In this list, the top 3 cheapest places to go on a trip are India, Nepal, and Vietnam. However, the cost of flights is not included in this list so wherever you are flying from, make sure to check cheap flights in your city.

Although these three are the cheapest places to travel to, you need to remember that infrastructure in these countries is different from what you are used to at home (thatโ€™s why they are cheap!).

I also included the cons (or safety issues) in each of these cheapest travel destinations so read on and let me know what you choose!

India is not for everyone but to date, it is on the top of the cheapest places to travel to in Asia. Go to India if you are looking for unparalleled cultural, historical, and natural diversity but also be ready for a chaotic environment.

India can be overwhelming for some due to its dense population, noise, and often chaotic traffic. For first-time travelers, I recommend the region of Rajasthan as it is the easiest to navigate.

How much should I budget per day in India?

Hereโ€™s a sample of what you can spend in India for $35 per day:

  • Accommodation: Budget guesthouse โ€“ $10
  • Breakfast: Local dish (e.g., masala dosa) โ€“ $2
  • Lunch: Thali (set meal) โ€“ $3
  • Dinner: Street food (e.g., samosas, pav bhaji) โ€“ $4

Nepal, the land of the mighty Himalayas, is great if you like trekking and spending time in the outdoors. The Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit are just two of its legendary trails.

Beyond mountains, if you are only looking for culture, Kathmandu Valley offers ancient temples and royal palaces. Nepal is the birthplace of Buddha so itโ€™s also great for wellness trips!

You might find infrastructure, especially in remote areas, to be underdeveloped, leading to occasional discomforts in transportation or accommodations.

I love Vietnam and I keep coming back here! I travel here a lot because itโ€™s one of my favorite food destinations in the world.

Hanoiโ€™s centuries-old architecture contrasts with Ho Chi Minhโ€™s urban buzz. The terraced fields of Sapa, the ethereal beauty of Halong Bay, and the ancient town of Hoi An offer varied landscapes and cultural experiences.

The rapid tourism growth has led to over-tourism in some spots in Vietnam, potentially diminishing the authentic experience. So watch out for travel scams!

4. Cambodia: $25-$40 per day

Think a dollar doesnโ€™t go far? In Siem Reap, just $1 can fetch you a plate of delicious fried rice and a draft beer while you lounge by Pub Street. | Photo: Pou Neang

Cambodiaโ€™s history, both ancient and recent, draws travelers in. The Angkor Wat temple complex is an architectural masterpiece rooted in the countryโ€™s Khmer heritage.

Beyond Angkor, places like the serene Battambang or the beaches of Sihanoukville offer diverse experiences.

Phnom Penh, with its tragic history and resilient spirit, provides a deeper understanding of Cambodiaโ€™s past.

So far, I have no cons of traveling to Cambodia. Apart from that it is one of the cheapest travel destinations, it is not that famous compared to its neighbors like Thailand or Vietnam.

๐Ÿ’ต How long can you travel for $5,000?

The duration of travel on a budget of $5,000 largely depends on several factors:

Some countries or cities are more affordable than others. For example, traveling in Southeast Asia or parts of Central America can be much cheaper than traveling in Western Europe or Japan.

Staying in luxury hotels, eating at high-end restaurants, or participating in costly activities will drain your budget faster than opting for budget accommodations, eating street food, or seeking free or low-cost activities.

Flying, especially internationally, can be a significant cost. Choosing overland travel or budget airlines, or traveling during sales and deals can make a difference. Also, how often you move between places can impact your costs.

A single long trip to one region might be more cost-effective than multiple short trips to various places because of reduced transportation costs.

To give a very rough estimate:

  • In Western Europe, Australia, or the US, a moderate budget might be $100-$150/day, allowing for 33-50 days.
  • In Southeast Asia, parts of South Asia, or Central America, a budget of $30-$50/day is feasible, allowing for 100-167 days.
  • In Africa or other parts of Asia, depending on the country, you might spend anywhere from $50-$100/day, translating to 50-100 days.

To maximize travel duration for $5,000, research your intended destinations thoroughly, plan wisely, and be flexible. But rest assured, $5,000 can go a long way if you plan wisely!
